Position Summary

This is a mid-level position under the direct supervision of the University Recreation administrative staff.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Typical tasks include but are not limited to:
- Ensure a safe environment for participants during class periods.
- Instruct Level 1-6 swim lessons.
- Monitor and enforce pool rules, regulations, and policies, including distribution of flyers and interest surveys.
- Answer questions from patrons and follow up on requests.
- Attend all university recreation meetings and in-services as required.
- Promote and enforce all University Recreation and aquatics policies and procedures.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Knowledge of facility’s emergency action plan and how to engage it.
- Availability immediately before and after each class to answer participant questions, respond to concerns, and consider suggestions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate effectively and interact with a diverse population.
- Ability to use sound judgment in decision-making.
- Ability to follow APSU guidelines, policies, procedures, and emergency preparedness.
- Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community, and the public.
- Attendance and punctuality are essential to this position.

Physical Requirements

- Must be able to perform basic swimming strokes such as freestyle and backstroke.
- Must be able to pass an initial swimming assessment for Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (W.S.I.) certification.

Required Minimum Qualifications

- Maintain and provide proof of CPR/AED certification OR complete certification within six (6) months of appointment and provide proof of certification and maintenance of certification during appointment.
- Current certification as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (W.S.I.)
- Direct deposit of pay is required.
- A background check may be required of the successful applicant.
