Position Summary Information

Position Summary

The Automotive Laboratory Technician will support the Department of Engineering Technology and other programs as may be assigned by maintaining facilities, equipment and inventory for the areas. The Laboratory Technician will be directed by the Program Manager of Automotive Engineering Technology and the Department Chair of Engineering Technology, for duties as described below. The automotive laboratory technician will also perform duties as described for the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Set up and maintain automotive and manufacturing laboratories. Work with faculty to select, order and integrate new equipment and training aids as determined by the automotive program manager. Repair or arrange for repair, if repair is beyond the technicians ability, equipment as needed.
• Set up labs for automotive and manufacturing classes in support of the faculty; assist students and instructor in laboratories with selection of components and equipment.
• Assist students with advanced automotive or manufacturing lab exercises as assigned by the course instructor.
• Disassemble and re-assemble automotive and manufacturing training aids as instructed by the automotive program manager.
• Maintain and service all automotive and manufacturing equipment on a schedule as determined by the automotive program manager.
• Clean all automotive and manufacturing equipment on a daily basis after use of the equipment.
• Clean automotive and manufacturing lab floors daily to include mopping, grease removal, and trash removal.
• Perform general lab upkeep to include cleaning all workbenches to remove all dirt, grease, and trash from each bench, and to empty all trash cans into proper exterior receptacles.
• Assist with annual equipment inventory checks.
• Arrange for assistance from the physical plant staff when needed.
• Assist with other departments labs and perform other duties as assigned by the automotive program manager or ENGT department chair.
• Assist with department activities on main campus; transport, set up and bring back equipment taken temporarily to campus for classes and recruiting events.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the automotive program manager or department chair

Essential Functions

• Ability to set up automotive and manufacturing equipment and prepare materials and equipment for automotive and manufacturing classes.
• Ability to act on verbal instructions to prepare labs for classes, order supplies, etc.
• Ability to make accurate mathematical computations as related to inventory and repair techniques.
• Ability to inspect facilities.
• Ability to perform daily check of equipment and make major repairs on equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
• Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the university community and the public.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously

Physical Requirements
Required Minimum Qualifications

• Associate degree in Automotive Technology or Automotive Engineering Technology.
• A minimum of five years documented fulltime experience working as an automotive repair technician or ASE master certification and three years of work experience as a master technician.
• Advanced knowledge of automotive components and equipment.
• Basic knowledge of manufacturing components and equipment.
• Advanced knowledge of automotive systems, components and advanced repair techniques.

OR
• A minimum of one year of documented automotive training at the college level (vocational technical training is not acceptable) with at least one year of automotive specific courses.
•A minimum of five years documented fulltime experience working as a ASE Master Certified Repair Technician.
•ASE Master Automobile Repair Technician certification.
•Advanced knowledge of automotive components and equipment.
•Basic knowledge of manufacturing components and equipment.
•Advanced knowledge of automotive systems, components and advanced repair techniques.
-A background check will be required of the successful applicant.
