Position Summary

Austin Peay State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant-Conservation Coordinator for the Tennessee Plant Conservation Alliance.

This is a full-time, two-year staff position commencing August 2017 within the Dept. of Biology and Center for Field Biology. The position term might be extended if additional revenue is secured.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

- Coordinate and assist in fieldwork related to Plant Conservation Alliance projects.
- Design and implement research projects in collaboration with University faculty, staff, and students concerning the biology and management of rare plants and rare plant communities, communicating results through publications and presentations.
- Establish and maintain regular communication with private, state, national, and international conservation organizations.
- Procure, assemble, and maintain germplasm collections (including seed) of rare and endangered plant species for conservation, research, and display collections in greenhouse and botanical garden and supervise activities pertaining to these collections conducted by students, volunteers, and staff.
- Teach one lecture and/or laboratory course in introductory general biology, botanical diversity, or ecology per semester.
- Serve on, but not direct, graduate thesis committees of students studying botany-related projects.
- Serve as the coordinator for the statewide TN Plant Conservation Alliance program.
- Develop educational programming and curricula related to botanical conservation.
- Serve as advisor on graduate thesis projects pertaining to plant ecology and/or field botany and supervise undergraduate researchers/interns.
- Write grant proposals and assist in other fund raising efforts.
- Publicize the program through presentations, articles in popular and professional publications, and brochures.
- Organize and train volunteers and student research assistants.
- Obtain permits, collect and document plant materials, organize field trips, propagate and maintain plant materials according to the highest professional standards.
- Coordinate meetings of the Tennessee Plant Conservation Alliance.
- Organize field trips, set deadlines for research results and reports, and gather permits and background literature for TN PCA volunteers.

Essential Functions

- Ability to work effectively with the public, private landowners, gardeners, agency personnel, volunteers, non-profit staff, undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and high school-aged children.

Physical Requirements

- Must be able to work in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings, including rugged mountains, in rivers, swamps, forests, grasslands.
- Must be able to hike at least 10 miles over rugged terrain.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Required Minimum Qualifications

- Ph.D. in Ecology, Botany, Plant Biology, Conservation Biology, Restoration Ecology or related field.
- ABD will be considered if degree is attained by time of appointment.
- Proficiency in ArcGIS.
- Proficiency in statistical analysis.
- Must be able to drive a wide variety of vehicles, including 4WD.
- Must be fluent in English.
- Must be proficient in natural history, ecology, and vegetation, preferably of eastern North America.
- Must have very good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences from nonprofessionals to professionals.
- Must have good skills with plant identification at the species, genus, and family levels, preferably of eastern North America.
- Experience navigating groups through meetings, negotiating project details with colleagues from multiple institutions, developing projects into programs, motivating students and volunteers, and empowering others to dedicate themselves to their work out of sense of responsibility to plant conservation.
- The preferred candidate should have experience with species-level conservation.
- Should have experience at procuring seed and/or living plants and familiarity with basic horticultural techniques, and growing and managing living plants and/or seed collections in greenhouse setting, seedbank facility, and/or botanical garden.
- Ability to teach the range of courses specified in the position summary.
- Evidence of good character, mature attitude, and professional integrity.
