Position Summary Information

Position Summary

This is an entry-level position under the direct supervision of the Adventure Programs Coordinator and Assistant Director supporting the facilitation of recreation trips and equipment rental program.

Availability: 1 position effective August 2017

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

- Assist with planning and organizing adventure programs.
- Maintain rental equipment through inspection, repairing, cleaning, tracking, cleaning and cataloging.
- Assist patrons with equipment in multiple adventure recreation areas.
- Belay new or inexperienced climbers.
- Provide information, training, and supervision pertinent to adventure recreation.
- Instruct skills and gives safety briefs for patrons on adventure recreation trips.
- Ensure safety of patrons on adventure recreation trips.
- Correct unsafe practices or conditions immediately according to Adventure Recreation SOPs.
- Provide first aid and/or initiates Emergency Action Plan in emergency situations.
- Complete administrative paperwork during scheduled shift.
- Assist with marketing efforts.
- Attends all scheduled meetings and in-services.
- Complete annual blood-borne pathogen training.
- Must be able to work indoors or outdoors in any weather condition.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
- Drive University vehicles.

Essential Functions

Ability to:

- Learn new concepts quickly and relay information to patrons.
- Correctly tie climbing knots and check for safety and usage.
- Issue, track, and follow up on late rental equipment as needed.
- Make recommendations and instruct patrons on proper usage of equipment .
- Work at heights indoors and outdoors.
- Pass University belay test.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Use sound judgment in decision-making and personal interactions
- Accept responsibility for decisions and personal actions.
- Follow directions and complete assigned tasks.
- Communicate effectively in person and in writing.
- Follow APSU guidelines, policies, procedures, and emergency preparedness.
- Interact in an effective manner with diverse population, the University community, and the public.
- Take personal responsibility for attendance and punctuality.
- Carry weights of up to 50 pounds long distances.

Physical Requirements

This position requires carrying weights up to 50 pounds in an outdoor setting for an extended period of time.

Required Minimum Qualifications

- Must be an APSU student enrolled at least ½ time.
- Must have and maintain a minimum 2.0 overall combined GPA.
- A background check may be required of successful applicant.
- Must have knowledge of common outdoor equipment or must complete training as required to include climbing equipment, camping equipment, and canoeing equipment.
- Must maintain and provide proof of CPR/AED/First Aid certification OR complete Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid certification within two (2) months of appointment and provide proof of certification and maintenance of certification during appointment.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Direct deposit of pay is required.
