Position Summary

The Group Fitness Instructor works under the direct supervision of the University Recreation administrative staff, Graduate Assistants and Undergraduate Assistants.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Typical tasks include, but are not limited to:

- Develop and teach your own safe and effective group fitness programs/exercise routines in accordance with current health and fitness standards and guidelines, taking into account the fitness level of group members as well as any other pertinent factors.
- Ensure group fitness routines are developed with the class description in mind.
- Assist with the development and promotion of the group fitness program to include the distribution of flyers and interest surveys, taking part in any demonstrations or any other promotional events that may occur.
- Assist with the basic maintenance and upkeep of the Drew Simmons and Foy group exercise studios, including returning all equipment and accessories to their appropriate locations and reporting any malfunctions encountered while in the facility.
- Ensure that all equipment is properly cleaned and stored after each use.
- Keep abreast of current fitness and exercise trends, development and research.
- Provide thorough instruction and exceptional personal attention.
- Promote and enforce all University Recreation policies and procedures.
- Attend all group fitness meetings and in-services as set by the University Recreation staff.
- Ensure a safe and non-offensive environment for patrons at all times.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Ability to develop and teach safe and effective group fitness program/exercise routines in accordance with current health and fitness standards and guidelines (modifiable to various skill/fitness levels).
- Ability to develop group fitness routines with the class description in mind.
- Ability to assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the facility and all fitness equipment by reporting malfunctions promptly and making minor repairs as needed.
- Ability to teach all scheduled classes on a semester basis to include agreed upon finals week, fall and spring break and holiday schedules.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to use sound judgment in decision-making and interactions.
- Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community and the public.
- Attendance and punctuality are essential to this position.
- Ability to arrive 15 minutes prior to every scheduled class in order to be fully prepared to set up prior to the class start time and to greet each participant.
- Ability to lift up to 45 lbs.
- Ability to make decisions, work independently, stay motivated and stay focused.
- Ability to follow APSU and University Recreation policy, procedures and emergency preparedness.
- Ability to remain visible and approachable to patrons at all times, acting as a resource by providing answers to questions or assistance as requested.
- Ability to exemplify professionalism at all times particularly in regards to attitude, punctuality, public relations, appearance and personal hygiene.
- Ability to attend all staff meetings.
- Availability immediately prior to and following each class to address participant concerns and answer questions.
- Availability to work at least one 4 to 6 hour shift in the fitness center not teaching a class.
- Ability to keep current group fitness certification(s) on file at University Recreation.

Physical Requirements
Required Minimum Qualifications

- Maintain a certification by a nationally recognized organization to include providing a current copy for employee records AND/OR the ability to provide documentation of previous work experience in the field.
- Maintain and provide proof of CPR/AED certification OR complete certification within (6) months of appointment and provide proof of certification and maintenance of certification during appointment.
- Must be enrolled at APSU at least ½ time.
- Minimum 2.0 GPA
- Direct deposit of pay required.
- A background check may be required.

  5. This position requires CPR/AED certification. Please choose one of the following:
    • I will maintain and provide proof of CPR/AED certification.
    • I will complete Red Cross CPR/AED certification within six (6) months of appointment and provide proof of certification and maintenance of certification during appointment.
